Water Safety – Stay Safe at the Beach this Summer

Posted on 16th August 2023

As the weather heats up and summer is in full swing, many families will be packing up their cars and heading off to enjoy a much-needed break by the beach. With all the excitement that comes with planning a holiday, it’s important not to forget about water safety, especially when children or grandchildren are involved.

The team here at Staying Alive know that nothing spoils a family holiday more than an accident in the water, which is why we’ve put together some helpful tips and first aid advice to help keep your loved ones safe.

1. Always supervise children around water – this seems like a no-brainer, but it’s worth reiterating. It only takes a few seconds for a child to get into trouble in the water, so never let them out of your sight.

2. Make sure everyone is wearing appropriate safety gear – this includes life jackets for those who are not strong swimmers and appropriate footwear to avoid injuries from rocks and shells.

3. Learn basic first aid – being able to administer basic first aid in an emergency can save a life. Know how to perform CPR and understand the signs of drowning.

4. Beware of rip currents – rip currents can be deadly and are often difficult to spot. If caught in a rip current, remember to stay calm, conserve energy, and swim parallel to the shore.

5. Know the warning flags – most beaches have a warning system that uses coloured flags to indicate the safety of the water. Make sure you know what each flag means and pay attention to them.

6. Stay hydrated – it’s easy to get caught up in the fun of the beach and forget to drink water. Make sure you and your family stay hydrated to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Remember, accidents can happen at any time, but being prepared can help reduce the risk. Make sure you pack a basic first aid kit, have a plan in case of an emergency, and always stay vigilant when your family is around water.

At Staying Alive, we believe that everyone deserves to enjoy their time by the beach without the fear of an accident. We hope that our tips and first aid advice help you to feel confident and prepared for your next holiday. Happy travels!
